Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing such medications must be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Users who have come off the jabs explain a powerful return of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become starving," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Use
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Use is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
