Critical Role Campaign 4 Reveals the Soldiers Party

Since the launch of Campaign 4, recently appointed game master Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with extensive world-building, a colorful mix of characters, and a thrilling plot including angels, fiends, and dark forces growing in power within the city.

Heads-up: Spoilers for Episode 3 of this adventure lie ahead.

The Soldiers Table Introduced

Episode 3 ended with a dramatic pause and revealed the first table of characters who will split off from the main group to embark on their own adventure, distinct from the additional parties.

The combat-focused team consists of the determined fighter (brought to life by the voice actor), the agile character (Laura), Tyranny (Whitney), Wicander (the player), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie).

The Reason for Division

Given 13 cast members, it was obvious from the beginning that keeping everyone at a single group would be unworkable.

Hence, the opening chapters of this story serve as an Introduction, intertwining the personal journeys before branching into three separate parties: Soldiers, Schemers, and Explorers.

Characteristics of the Warrior Group

As described by the DM, the Soldiers table is for adventurers who enjoy a traditionally charged battle-oriented gameplay experience where non-violent answers are few and far between.

At first glance, characters like the reluctant priest the cleric might look unsuited, but the events of the latest installment make it clear why these specific adventurers are ideally matched for the combat party.

Why They Must Go

To begin with, the team knows exactly where to go next after a violent first encounter with the antagonists.

Casimir of Thjazi—whose demise kicked off the story’s plot—exploited The Crow Keepers for his selfish purposes, entering the hidden lair, attacking the rogue, and swiping all the magical artifacts to dispose of.

The antagonist then cleared his liabilities and fled to a secure base in the northern region, north of the urban center, with Cyd hot on his heels.

Personal Motivations

Moreover, each character has a personal reason to depart Dol-Makjar:

  • The rogue, as Thjazi’s partner and trusted friend, desires vengeance.
  • The knowledgeable figure knows the region and cautions that it is a nasty environment.
  • The warrior and The cleric, having disobeyed his family’s wishes to eliminate the target and instead rescued him, have no safe haven.
  • Yet, their position as key figures in House Halovar could enable the party enter places they usually can’t.
  • Additionally, Teor pledged a life debt to Wicander for his rescue and will now go with him wherever.

Fugitives

In addition, all of them are hunted by the rulers that rule the setting for a variety of reasons, making staying in the city dangerous:

  • The rogue and The character are notorious outlaws.
  • Tyranny and Wicander turned against the influential house and the legion of demons they are aligned with.
  • The fighter is marked for death by the family.

This results in them little choice but to journey toward the remote area in pursuit of the antagonist.

Future Episodes

From the latest episode’s Cooldown, we learn that the warrior group won’t be around the following episode, leaving the remaining eight cast members to form the Explorers and Schemers parties.

Viewers can anticipate finding out which players will be where in the season’s final introductory chapter, available to watch on next week.
